Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases comprise a family of
ubiquitousproline-directed, protein-serine/threonine kinases, which
participatein signal transduction pathways that control intracellular
eventsincluding acute responses to hormones and major developmental
changesin organisms. MAP kinases lie in protein kinase cascades. This
reviewdiscusses the regulation and functions of mammalian MAP kinases.
Nonenzymaticmechanisms that impact MAP kinase functions and findings
fromgene disruption studies are highlighted. Particular emphasisis on
ERK1/2.
