Abstract
DEVELOPMENTS in thyroid autoimmunity have been reviewed in thisjournal previously (1, 2), but since then there have been majoradvances in our understanding of the mechanisms responsiblefor autoimmunity in general, generated in large part by theapplication of novel molecular techniques. These discoveriesin turn have been used to develop new directions of researchin the field of autoimmune thyroid disorders, which will bethe subject of the present article. Approximately the same formathas been adopted as in our previous review (1), in an attemptto provide continuity, but we have chosen to emphasize particularlywork conducted during the last 5 yr for obvious reasons. Beforeconsidering the thyroid disorders themselves, however, it isworth providing a brief resume of what is known currently aboutimmunoregulation and self-tolerance in general, and then reviewingthe results obtained in animal models of thyroiditis that continueto generate otherwise unobtainable insights into pathogenesis.
